Recipes with no added sugar

No added sugar means no ingredient that's there to sweeten – no table sugar, no honey or syrup, and no dates, dried fruit or fruit purée either. Fresh fruit is allowed: it brings its own sugar, and the nutrition info shows it per serving.

These recipes do without any sweetening ingredient: no table sugar, honey, maple syrup or coconut sugar, and no dates, dried fruit, fruit purée or juice either. If they taste sweet, it's from fresh fruit such as berries or apples. There are lots of savoury dishes too.

Frequently asked questions

How are the sweet recipes sweetened?

With fresh fruit at most, like berries, apples or banana. Recipes with dates, dried fruit or fruit purée carry the label ‘Sweetened with fruit only’; recipes with honey, maple syrup or coconut sugar carry neither label.

Is honey better than sugar?

Not really. Like sugar, honey is mostly glucose and fructose; other substances are only present in traces. That's why we count honey as added sugar.

Why don't dates count as ‘no added sugar’?

Because they're there to sweeten. The UK and EU rule for ‘no added sugar’ excludes any food used for its sweetening properties – including dates, dried fruit and fruit purée.
