In an air fryer, set about 20 °C lower than the oven temperature in the recipe and allow just over half to three quarters of the oven time. Cook potatoes, chips and bakes at no more than 180 °C.
Example: Potatoes & chips: 200 °C (180 °C fan) for 30 minutes in the oven.
180 °C · 17–20 min. Shake after 9 min, take them out when golden.

| Food | Air fryer time | Max. temperature | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vegetables | 50–60% of the oven time | 200 °C | 200 °C · 25 min → 180 °C · 13–15 min |
| Potatoes & chips | 55–65% of the oven time | 180 °C | 200 °C · 35 min → 180 °C · 19–23 min |
| Chicken & turkey | 60–75% of the oven time | 200 °C | 200 °C · 30 min → 180 °C · 18–23 min |
| Beef, lamb & mince | 60–75% of the oven time | 200 °C | 200 °C · 20 min → 180 °C · 12–15 min |
| Fish & prawns | 60–75% of the oven time | 200 °C | 200 °C · 15 min → 180 °C · 9–11 min |
| Frozen food | 70–85% of the oven time | 180 °C | 220 °C · 22 min → 180 °C · 15–19 min |
| Muffins & bakes | 60–80% of the oven time | 180 °C | 180 °C · 22 min → 160 °C · 13–18 min |
Example: Homemade chips: the recipe says 200 °C (180 °C fan) and 35 minutes in the oven.
Set about 20 °C lower than the recipe and allow just over half to three quarters of the oven time. Vegetables are done fastest, frozen food takes longest. Start checking at half the time.
If the bag says 20 to 25 minutes at 220 °C (200 °C fan) in the oven, they need about 15 to 20 minutes at 180 °C in the air fryer. Shake them two or three times and take them out as soon as they’re golden.
When starchy foods brown, acrylamide forms, and from 170 to 180 °C much more of it. The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) advises: go for golden, not burnt – golden yellow rather than dark brown.
For 1 to 2 portions, mostly. Large roasts, whole chickens or traybakes rarely fit in the basket – the oven is more practical for those. Fill the basket no more than halfway and spread everything in one layer.
Not necessarily. The converter assumes a preheated air fryer (about 3 minutes). If you start from cold, add 2 to 3 minutes.
Yes, as a guide. An air fryer is a small fan oven, but models heat differently – so check 2 minutes early the first time.
