Paste your ingredient list, one ingredient per line, and add the number of servings. The calculator reads the amount and the ingredient on each line, turns pieces, spoons and tins into grams and adds up the nutrition values from the German Nutrient Database (BLS 4.0). The veggie chilli in the example has 392 kcal per serving when it serves 4. Anything it doesn’t recognise is shown line by line.

Pieces, spoons, tins: what the calculator counts
If a line has no grams, the calculator uses these weights. Energy values from the BLS 4.0.

How the calculator works
Each line is one ingredient. The calculator reads the amount, including fractions like ½ and ranges like 2–3, and the ingredient.
Pieces, spoons, tins and pots are turned into grams with fixed weights, for example 1 onion = 100 g. The weights are in the table above.
The values per 100 g come from the German Nutrient Database (BLS 4.0) of the Max Rubner-Institut. The total of all lines is divided by your servings.
Salt counts when there’s an amount, for example 1 tsp salt (about 6.5 g). A pinch, “to taste”, salt for the cooking water, pepper and other spices don’t count, and neither does “a little”. Water has 0 kcal.
Values are rounded like on food labels: energy to whole numbers, grams to whole numbers from 10 g and to one decimal below, salt under 1 g to two decimals.
If a recipe you import into the SmarTasty app comes without nutrition values, the app tries this calculation first.
Example: Veggie chilli, serves 4
1 tbsp olive oil → 14 g Olive oil: 121 kcal
1 onion, chopped → 100 g Onion: 34 kcal
2 garlic cloves → 10 g Garlic: 10 kcal
1 red pepper → 145 g Pepper: 52 kcal
1 courgette → 285 g Courgette: 63 kcal
400g tin chopped tomatoes → 400 g Tinned tomatoes: 76 kcal
400g tin kidney beans, drained → 240 g Kidney beans, cooked: 310 kcal
1 tsp ground cumin → spice, doesn’t count
250g brown rice → 250 g Brown rice, raw: 900 kcal
Total 1,566 kcal ÷ 4 servings = 392 kcal per serving.
Good to know
Enter amounts uncooked, as you buy them. Cooking mainly removes water, so the values per serving stay almost the same.
Rice, pasta and pulses weigh two to three times as much once cooked. If you enter cooked amounts, add “cooked”.
Tinned pulses count drained: a 400g tin of chickpeas = 240 g.
Oil for frying only counts with an amount, for example “1 tbsp olive oil”.
Ready-made sauces, pastes and stock cubes are often not recognised. Then they don’t count, and you’ll see that in the list.
For juices and smoothies the whole fruit counts, including what stays in the sieve.
Frequently asked questions
How do I work out the nutrition of a recipe?
Paste the ingredient list, one ingredient per line, and add the number of servings. The calculator adds up the values of all ingredients and divides by the servings. In the example: veggie chilli with 1,566 kcal ÷ 4 = 392 kcal per serving.
Where do the values come from?
From the German Nutrient Database (BLS 4.0) of the Max Rubner-Institut. For each ingredient the calculator takes the matching entry, raw or cooked.
What happens to ingredients the calculator doesn’t know?
They don’t count and are marked “not recognised” below your list. The values are then likely too low. A simple way of writing it with grams often helps, for example “200g chicken breast”.
Raw or cooked amounts?
Raw, as in the recipe and as you buy them. If a line says “cooked”, the calculator uses the cooked value. Cooking mainly removes water, so the values per serving stay almost the same.
How do I get values per 100 g?
Weigh the finished dish. Divide the calories of the whole recipe by its weight in grams and multiply by 100. The calories of the whole recipe are on the result card.
How much do an onion, a tablespoon of oil and a tin weigh?
1 onion counts as 100 g, 1 tbsp olive oil as 14 g, a 400g tin of chopped tomatoes as 400 g and a 400g tin of chickpeas as 240 g drained. All weights are in the table.
Are my ingredients saved?
No. The list is only sent to our server for the calculation and is not saved.
