Water intake calculator
Adults need about 30 to 35 ml of water per kilogram of body weight a day. A little over half of it you drink, the rest comes from food and your metabolism. At 70 kg that is about 1.4 litres to drink.
To drink
Example:
1.4 litres a day
Water in total: 2.5 litres. Food and metabolism provide the rest.
Water in total (35 ml per kg): 2.5 l
From food and metabolism: 1.1 l
Drink goal in the app (33 ml per kg): 2.3 l
You need more with exercise, heat and fever – see below.

How the calculator works
Water in total = weight × ml per kg from the DGE reference values: 35 ml from 19 to 50, 30 ml from 51 and 40 ml from 15 to 18.
To drink: the same share as in the DGE table for your age group, a little over half. Solid food (about a third) and water made by your metabolism provide the rest.
The SmarTasty app sets your drink goal higher: 33 ml per kg of body weight, about as much as the water in total.
Rounded to 50 ml.
Example: 70 kg, 35 years:
Water in total: 70 × 35 ml = 2,450 ml, rounded 2.5 litres
To drink: 54% = 1.4 litres
With exercise, heat and illness
In hot weather: drink a glass every 1 to 2 hours, even when you are not thirsty (DGE).
With exercise: weigh yourself before and after. For every kilogram less, drink up to 1.5 litres afterwards (NATA 2017).
Fever, diarrhoea and vomiting raise your needs, as do a lot of salt and a lot of protein.
While breastfeeding, the DGE gives about 1.7 litres to drink.
With heart or kidney failure your fluid may be limited – then please talk to your doctor.
Frequently asked questions
How much water should I drink a day?
About 1.2 to 1.5 litres, says the DGE for adults. In total you need more, around 2.3 to 2.7 litres, but part of it comes with your food. With exercise and in hot weather you drink more.
Do coffee and tea count?
Yes, coffee and black tea count towards your fluid too. Ideally you drink mostly water and unsweetened tea.
How do I know I am drinking enough?
Pale urine is a good sign. Dark urine and thirst show you should drink more. Older people often feel less thirsty and do best drinking to a plan.
Can you drink too much?
Rarely for healthy people. But very large amounts in a short time can lower the sodium in your blood. Spread your drinks across the day.
Why does the app show more than the calculator?
The app uses 33 ml per kilogram for your drink goal, about as much as the water in total. The calculator shows you both: the DGE value for drinks and the water in total.
Are my details saved?
No. The calculator works in your browser and sends nothing.
