On 16:8 you eat within an 8-hour window and then take a 16-hour break. If your last meal is at 8pm, your fast ends at 12pm the next day and your eating window is 12pm to 8pm. The calculator works this out for your own times, for 18:6, 14:10 and 12:12 too.

How the calculator works
The first number is the break without food, the second your eating window – together 24 hours.
Last meal + hours of the break = end of the fast and start of your eating window. If you enter your first meal, the calculator works forwards: first meal + hours of the window = last meal. Past midnight it carries on into the next day.
16:8 and 18:6 are the same schedules as in the SmarTasty app (which also has 20:4). 12:12 and 14:10 are the gentle start: a 12-hour break first, then one hour more each week.
Example: Schedule 16:8, last meal at 8pm:
8pm + 16 hours = 12pm the next day: your fast ends.
Eating window: 12pm to 8pm, 8 hours.
Who intermittent fasting isn’t for
Under 18: while you’re still growing, you need regular energy and nutrients. The SmarTasty app doesn’t suggest fasting to anyone under 18.
If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.
If you have or have had an eating disorder, even a long time ago – or if strict food rules quickly turn into pressure or guilt for you.
If you’re underweight (a BMI under 18.5). The app doesn’t suggest fasting then either.
Taking diabetes medicines, or medicines you must take with food? Talk to your doctor before you start – your doses may need adjusting (healthdirect).
If you are older, talk to your GP first (healthdirect).
If you feel dizzy, shaky or sick, eat something. Stopping early isn’t failing.
Frequently asked questions
When can I eat again on 16:8?
16 hours after your last meal. If your last meal is at 8pm, you can eat again from 12pm the next day, until 8pm.
Does sleep count towards the fast?
Yes. The break starts with your last meal, and the night is part of it. That’s why on 16:8 a large part of the break happens while you sleep.
Which schedule should I start with?
Start small: a 12-hour break first (12:12), then one hour more each week. Whether you stay at 14 or 16 hours is up to you. More hours aren’t better.
What can I drink while fasting?
Water, unsweetened tea and black coffee. Milk in your coffee, juice, fizzy drinks, smoothies and alcohol all have calories and end the break.
How much should I eat in my eating window?
As much as you’d normally eat in a day, just in fewer hours. Fasting doesn’t mean eating less than you need. Eating under 1,200 kcal a day (women) or 1,500 kcal (men) over a longer period isn’t a good idea.
Who shouldn’t fast?
Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, anyone with an eating disorder (now or in the past), anyone underweight and anyone under 18. With diabetes or medication, only after talking to your doctor.
Are my details saved?
No. The calculator works in your browser and sends nothing.
