Blue Zones-style meal plan: 7 days of recipes

Seven days of breakfast, lunch, dinner and a snack, all from our Blue Zones-style recipes: cook them as they are or add them to your Meal Planner with one tap.

The week follows the patterns of the Blue Zones, five regions whose traditional way of eating has been studied closely: plenty of pulses, wholegrains, veg, nuts and olive oil, fish now and then, little processed or red meat.

A way of eating, not a treatment. If you have a health condition, please talk to your doctor.

Frequently asked questions

What’s on the plate this week?

Pulses like lentils, beans and chickpeas, wholegrains like oats, lots of veg, nuts, seeds and olive oil, and fish now and then. Processed meat, red meat and ready-made products rarely come up. The recipes are listed above, day by day.

What are the Blue Zones?

Five regions: Okinawa in Japan, Sardinia, Ikaria in Greece, Nicoya in Costa Rica and Loma Linda in California. Their traditional diets are mostly plant-based, with pulses almost every day and plenty of wholegrains, nuts and olive oil.

What does ‘Blue Zones principle’ mean?

It’s our score for this way of eating. It gives points for pulses, wholegrains, veg, fruit, nuts and seeds, olive oil and oily fish, and takes points off for processed meat, red meat, a lot of salt, ready-made products and a lot of added sugar. This week only has dishes that score 7 out of 10 or more and have a key ingredient.

How do I get the shopping list?

Tap “Add ingredients to list”: the week goes into your Meal Planner, then you choose what to buy. Amounts are worked out for the number of people you cook for. With an account you have your plan and list in the app too.

Can I swap dishes?

Yes. Pick another recipe from our Blue Zones-style recipes, for example a soup or a Mediterranean dish. In the Meal Planner you swap a dish with one tap.
