Dairy-free desserts without cream or butter

These desserts contain no milk, cream, butter, quark or yoghurt. Coconut milk, silken tofu, cashews or avocado make them creamy. If you have an allergy, check the ingredients yourself as well.

Cream, butter and mascarpone are in lots of desserts – but you can do without them. Chocolate mousse works with silken tofu or avocado, panna cotta with coconut milk, cheesecake with soaked cashews. There are also brownies made with black beans or sweet potato, crumbles, fudge, energy balls and sorbets. Most recipes are vegan.

Frequently asked questions

What can I use instead of cream in desserts?

Tinned coconut milk or coconut cream, cashew cream made from soaked cashews, or silken tofu. Ripe avocado works for mousse, frozen banana for ice cream.

What can I use instead of butter in baking?

Coconut oil, mild olive oil or nut butter. In brownies and muffins, mashed banana, apple purée or blended beans can replace some of the fat.

Are dairy-free desserts always vegan?

Not always. Dairy-free only means no milk and nothing made from it. Some recipes contain eggs or honey – but most desserts on this page are vegan, and the label is on each recipe.

How do you decide a dessert is dairy-free?

With fixed rules: if an ingredient contains milk, cream, butter, ghee, quark, yoghurt or cheese, the recipe doesn’t count as dairy-free. Plant alternatives like coconut milk or oat cream don’t count as milk.
