Low-FODMAP Christmas: cookies and festive dinners

A low-FODMAP Christmas: cookies with almonds, butter and maple syrup, plus duck, venison or fish with fennel, Brussels sprouts or potato dumplings. There’s no onion, garlic, pulses, honey or dried fruit. Ideally, follow the diet with support from a dietitian; if you have a medical condition, talk to your GP.

Frequently asked questions

Which Christmas cookies are low-FODMAP?

Cookies without honey, dates, dried fruit or large amounts of wheat – for example gluten-free Vanillekipferl with buckwheat, Pfeffernüsse with maple syrup, Brunsli or Heidesand. They’re sweetened with maple syrup or coconut sugar.

What can I cook for a low-FODMAP Christmas?

For example duck breast on orange and fennel, braised duck legs on sweetheart cabbage, venison steaks with celeriac salad or sea bass on fennel. Potato dumplings and roasted Brussels sprouts go well with them.

How are recipes classed as low-FODMAP?

With fixed rules based on Monash University’s classifications: a recipe only gets the label if none of its ingredients is on our list of high-FODMAP foods and any ingredient with a portion limit stays below it. What you tolerate is best worked out with a dietitian.
