Ingredients

Method

You’ll need: oven · baking dish · mixing bowl

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 °C (160 °C fan) and have a small baking dish ready.
  2. Wash the wild blueberries or use them frozen, mix with the lemon juice and spread them out in the dish.
  3. Rub the oats, ground almonds, soft butter, honey and Ceylon cinnamon together in a bowl into rough crumbs.
  4. Scatter the crumble loosely over the blueberries so a crisp top forms during baking.
  5. Bake the crumble at 180 °C for 20–25 min until the topping is golden brown and the blueberries are visibly bubbling.
  6. Serve while still warm, on its own or with a little natural yoghurt or a dollop of cream if you like.

Good to know

A crumble like this is pure oven happiness. Crisp on top, juicy underneath, and in between that smell that instantly makes everything cosy.

Swaps

Butter → ghee (buttery flavour, heat-stable) Honey → date paste (fruity sweetness) Porridge oats → coconut flakes (more bite) Ground almonds → chopped walnuts (contain omega-3, stronger flavour)

Allergens

Contains milk, tree nuts (almonds) and gluten (oats) unless the oats are labelled gluten-free. With children, keep an eye on the sweetness from the honey – and no honey for babies under one year old. In pregnancy, the recipe is usually fine.

Frequently asked questions

What's special about wild blueberries?

Wild blueberries are usually smaller and more intensely coloured than cultivated blueberries. They also contain fibre, vitamin C and manganese; depending on the variety and origin, their anthocyanin content can be higher.

What nutrients are in almonds?

Almonds mainly provide vitamin E, magnesium, manganese and monounsaturated fatty acids. There's also fibre and some plant protein.

What do the oats bring to the crumble?

Oats contain soluble fibre such as beta-glucans. With a sensitive digestion, though, it depends on how well you personally get on with them and on the portion size – and they contain gluten unless labelled gluten-free.

Is Ceylon cinnamon the better choice?

Ceylon cinnamon usually contains much less coumarin than cassia cinnamon. That's why people who use cinnamon often tend to choose Ceylon cinnamon.

What does lemon juice bring to the recipe besides flavour?

Lemon juice provides some vitamin C and a fresh acidity that balances the sweetness. In this small amount, though, its actual nutrient contribution stays fairly modest.
