Ingredients
2 slices of wholegrain bread
2 organic eggs
50g cheddar
1 tbsp butter
1 bunch of chives
Method
You’ll need: frying pan · chopping board · knife
Spread one side of each slice of bread with butter.
Place the bread slices butter side down in a cold frying pan, spread the grated cheddar on top and turn on the hob.
Fry the bread over a medium heat until the cheese has melted and the underside is crisp.
At the same time, fry the eggs in a second pan – the egg yolks should stay slightly runny.
Lay the fried eggs on the cheese toasts, sprinkle with the finely chopped chives and serve hot.
Good to know
A grilled cheese sandwich is pure comfort food. Add a runny fried egg and it becomes a really satisfying breakfast.
Swaps
Cheddar → Gouda (if you'd prefer a much milder, less tangy cheese on your warm bread in the morning).
Cooking tips
Always start toasting the bread in a cold pan. That gives the cheese on top enough time to melt before the bread burns underneath.
Storage
Grilled cheese loses its texture as soon as it cools. Eat this toast straight from the hot pan.
Allergens
Contains egg and milk. Contains gluten from the bread. Runny egg: avoid in pregnancy – fry the eggs until the yolks are firm.
