Ingredients

Method

You’ll need: blender · chopping board · knife · sieve

  1. Wash the ginger, turmeric, apple and unwaxed lemon thoroughly. Squeeze the lemon, cut the apple into small pieces and roughly chop the ginger and turmeric.
  2. Put the apple, ginger, turmeric and lemon juice in the blender. Add a little water and blend until fine.
  3. Add the black pepper and blend again until the shot is as smooth as possible. For a thinner consistency, work in a little more water.
  4. If you like it finer, pass the mixture through a sieve or cloth. This makes the shot smoother and less fibrous.
  5. Chill the shot briefly or pour it straight into small glasses. Stir well before pouring, as the ingredients settle easily.
  6. Serve fresh, in small sips.

Good to know

Small, fiery, glowing – exactly how a good shot should be. The flavour is intense but bright and fresh. If you like something punchy in the morning, this one's for you.

Swaps

Apple → pear (a little milder, also brings natural sweetness and fibre). Lemon → orange (less acidity, also provides vitamin C). Fresh turmeric → turmeric powder (handy to keep in the cupboard, also contains curcuminoids). Water → coconut water (mild flavour, also provides potassium).

Allergens

Naturally free from the main allergens. The heat and acidity are often unfamiliar for small children, and in pregnancy or with a sensitive stomach it's better to keep the amounts small.
