Ingredients

Method

You’ll need: blender · juicer · sieve

  1. Wash the ginger root, turmeric root and unwaxed oranges thoroughly. Peel the oranges and roughly chop the ginger and turmeric.
  2. Put the ginger root, turmeric root and oranges in a blender or juicer. Process everything finely until you have a strong, bright mixture.
  3. Stir in the olive oil and black pepper or blend them in briefly. That way the shot comes together a little more smoothly and evenly.
  4. If you prefer a finer texture, push the mixture through a sieve. For more character, you can also leave it as it is.
  5. Chill the shot briefly or enjoy it fresh straight away. Stir again before pouring.
  6. Pour into small glasses and serve in small sips.

Good to know

This shot is small but pretty direct in flavour. Fresh, spicy and with a warm heat that lingers.

Swaps

Ginger root → galangal (similarly spicy, a little milder) Unwaxed oranges → lemon or grapefruit in moderation (less sugar, still plenty of vitamin C) Olive oil → avocado or a little creamed coconut Black pepper → Ceylon cinnamon or fresh chilli (a different kind of heat)

Allergens

The ingredients aren't among the classic main allergens, but citrus fruit and black pepper can irritate sensitive mucous membranes; only give it to small children very carefully because of the heat, and during pregnancy it's usually unproblematic in normal kitchen amounts – if in doubt, check what's right for you.

Frequently asked questions

What compounds are in ginger and turmeric?

Ginger contains gingerols and shogaols, among others, and turmeric mainly curcuminoids. These plant compounds shape the typical flavour, heat and colour.

Why is there black pepper in the shot?

Black pepper provides piperine and a distinctive spiciness. Pepper and turmeric are also a classic pairing in many spice blends, such as curry powder.

What do the oranges provide nutritionally?

Oranges mainly bring vitamin C, plus some folate and potassium. They also contain natural fruit acids and, depending on how you process them, some fibre.

Is the shot too strong for a sensitive stomach?

That varies from person to person. Ginger, turmeric, citrus and pepper can be pleasant for some, but irritating for others because of the heat and acidity.

Why is there a little olive oil in the shot?

Olive oil provides monounsaturated fats and makes the flavour rounder, taking the edge off the sharpness of the ginger a little.
