  4. If it's too thick for you, add a little more oat milk and blend again briefly.
  5. Pour straight into a glass and serve fresh.

Good to know

When mornings should feel light and clear, this smoothie is just right. Creamy and soft green, with a little caffeine from the matcha. No frills, but plenty of character.

Swaps

Baby spinach → kale (more vitamin C and often more micronutrients) Frozen banana → frozen avocado (less sugar, creamy texture, more monounsaturated fats) Unsweetened oat milk → unsweetened soya milk (usually more protein, just as versatile) Hulled hemp seeds → almond butter (more vitamin E, richer texture)

Allergens

Contains gluten from the oat milk unless it's certified gluten-free. Hemp seeds are not one of the major allergens. For children and during pregnancy, matcha is best kept to small amounts because of its caffeine. Contains: gluten (oats).

Frequently asked questions

What's in matcha, nutritionally?

Matcha contains naturally occurring caffeine and catechins, including EGCG. The concentration can vary a lot depending on quality and processing.

Which nutrients do hemp seeds add to the smoothie?

Hulled hemp seeds provide unsaturated fats plus some magnesium and iron. They also contain plant protein, even if the amount in a small serving stays modest.

Does raw spinach in a smoothie suit everyone?

For many people, yes, but larger amounts of raw leaf spinach can sometimes be hard on sensitive stomachs. Spinach also contains oxalates, which can matter if you're sensitive to them.

Why does banana go so well with it nutritionally?

Banana brings potassium and, depending on ripeness, different proportions of sugar and starch. Riper bananas taste sweeter, while less ripe ones usually contain a little more resistant starch.

Is oat milk a good base for this smoothie?

Unsweetened oat milk makes a mild, creamy base and, depending on the brand, contains some beta-glucan. Many products are also fortified with calcium or vitamins, so it's worth checking the label.
