Ingredients

Method

You’ll need: blender · chopping board · knife

  1. Peel the ginger, cut the pineapple into chunks and have the banana ready. If you're using fresh turmeric root, peel it too and chop it roughly.
  2. Put the pineapple, banana, ginger and turmeric in the blender. Add the black pepper straight in.
  3. Blend everything finely until the smoothie is creamy and even. If you like it thinner, add a small splash of water.
  4. Taste briefly and check the consistency. Blend again if needed so the ginger and pineapple are really fine.
  5. Pour the smoothie into a glass or bowl. Serve straight away.

Good to know

Fruity, a little spicy and pleasantly sunny in the glass. A smoothie like this seems simple but tastes surprisingly rounded and fresh.

Swaps

Ginger → fresh galangal (similarly spicy, also contains aromatic plant compounds) ½ ripe banana → ½ avocado (less sugar, but more fibre and monounsaturated fats) 200 g pineapple → 200 g mango or papaya (less acidic, provides vitamin C and carotenoids) 1 tsp ground turmeric → 1 tsp Ceylon cinnamon (aromatic, contains polyphenols)

Allergens

The recipe is naturally free from the most common allergens, but ginger, pepper or pineapple can irritate a sensitive stomach. For young children and during pregnancy, keep the spices mild and check with a professional if you're unsure.

Frequently asked questions

Why does black pepper go into the smoothie?

Black pepper contains piperine, which brings a subtle heat. Together with ginger and turmeric, it gives the smoothie its warm, spicy note.

Fresh turmeric or ground turmeric – which is better?

Both provide curcuminoids, but in different concentrations and with a slightly different aroma. Ground turmeric is usually more intense and consistent, while the fresh root often tastes a little brighter and fresher.

What's in pineapple, nutritionally?

Pineapple mainly provides vitamin C and some manganese, plus water, natural fruit acids and small amounts of fibre.

Does ginger suit everyone?

Not always. Many people find ginger pleasant, but with a sensitive stomach, reflux or a lot of heat in your everyday diet, it can also feel irritating.

Why banana in this smoothie?

Banana brings potassium, some vitamin B6 and a soft texture. It also rounds off the acidity of the pineapple.
