  4. Finely slice the chives and fold them in gently.
  5. Season with salt and pepper and chill the spread briefly if you like it a little firmer.
  6. Serve on wholegrain bread, crackers or with veg sticks, and store leftovers well sealed in the fridge.

Good to know

Sometimes it just needs to be quick and good. This spread is creamy, fresh and pleasantly savoury. Just right for an easy snack on bread.

Swaps

Cream cheese → soft goat's cheese (often a little stronger in flavour, also provides protein and calcium); chives → parsley (brings a little more vitamin C and folate); mustard → horseradish (hotter, used in a similarly small amount); sardines → mackerel (also an oily sea fish with protein and omega-3 fatty acids)

Allergens

Contains fish, milk and usually mustard as allergens. For children, only serve it finely mashed and mildly seasoned; during pregnancy, well-heated or safely preserved tinned sardines are usually fine. Contains: milk, mustard.
