Ingredients

Method

You’ll need: chopping board · knife · mixing bowl

  1. Thoroughly stir together the peanut butter, oats, cocoa powder, honey, chia seeds, vanilla extract and sea salt in a bowl until you have an even mixture.
  2. Finely chop the dark chocolate and fold it into the mixture. If the mixture is still very soft, leave it to stand briefly.
  3. Chill the bowl for 15–20 min so the mixture firms up and is easier to shape.
  4. Divide the mixture into even portions and roll them into compact balls with slightly damp hands.
  5. Chill the balls again until firm. This gives them a pleasantly stable texture.
  6. Enjoy them straight from the fridge, or leave them at room temperature briefly if you like them a little softer.

Good to know

When it needs to be quick, these little balls are pleasantly easy. Full of flavour, no oven needed, and good to make ahead.

Swaps

Honey → date paste (also provides fibre, no added refined sugar); Peanut butter → almond butter (provides vitamin E, a little milder in flavour; contains tree nuts); Oats → fine buckwheat flakes (a gluten-free alternative if labelled accordingly); Dark chocolate → cacao nibs (less sweet, purer cocoa flavour)

Allergens

Contains peanuts and gluten (oats) unless labelled gluten-free; depending on the chocolate, may contain traces of milk, nuts or soya. For children, only offer them in an age-appropriate way because of the firm texture – no honey for babies under one year old. In pregnancy, the ingredients are fine in normal kitchen amounts.
