Protein oatmeal breakfast with caramelised almonds: creamy oats with almond milk, protein powder, wild blueberries, cinnamon and crunchy almonds.
You’ll need: frying pan · saucepan · chopping board · knife · mixing bowl · sieve · wooden spoon
A breakfast like this takes little effort and still feels like something special. Warm, creamy, slightly nutty – and the caramelised almonds make all the difference.
Almond milk (unsweetened) → unsweetened tinned coconut milk, diluted (often fewer additives, creamier) Maple syrup/honey → mashed banana or unsweetened apple purée (natural sweetness from fruit)
Contains tree nuts (almonds, almond milk) and gluten (oats, unless labelled gluten-free); the protein powder may add other allergens. Generally suitable for children and during pregnancy if all the ingredients agree with you and the protein powder suits your diet.
Oats contain soluble fibre, including beta-glucans. They're a natural part of the grain and give oatmeal its pleasantly thick, creamy texture.
Almonds mainly contain unsaturated fats, plus vitamin E, magnesium and a little calcium. They also bring a small amount of fibre.
Wild blueberries are usually smaller and have relatively more skin, where many of the pigments sit. So they can contain more anthocyanins for the same amount, although the values vary with the harvest and origin.
That depends a lot on the type. Whey protein can cause problems for sensitive people because of lactose or milk components; plant-based blends don't automatically agree with you better and, depending on the recipe, can also cause wind.
Both sweeten mainly through sugars such as glucose and fructose. Maple syrup contains small amounts of minerals such as manganese, and honey brings tiny amounts of other compounds depending on the type – but nutritionally the differences are fairly small.
