This roll is uncomplicated, juicy and pleasantly savoury. It looks special without being complicated. Just right when you're after something hearty that works on a weeknight.
Wild salmon → Arctic char or trout (similar protein content, often a little milder, also provide omega-3 fatty acids; if smoked, the pregnancy note applies too) Cream cheese → cottage cheese or plain skyr cream cheese (more protein per calorie, usually fewer additives) Grated mild cheese → a smaller amount of soft goat's cheese or parmesan (more flavour per gram, so you often need less) Young spinach → chard or kale, briefly steamed (more variety; also provide vitamin K, folate and other plant compounds)
Contains fish, egg and milk. Usually good for children as long as the salmon is free of bones. In pregnancy, leave out the smoked salmon or swap it for cooked salmon, as it isn't heated here.
Wild salmon mainly provides the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. Their content can vary a little depending on the fishing area and season.
Spinach contains folate, vitamin K and beta-carotene as well as some magnesium and potassium, among other things. The exact amounts depend on the variety and freshness.
Eggs provide protein, choline, vitamin B12, selenium and fat-soluble vitamins. Choline is a nutrient that people rarely talk about in everyday life.
That varies from person to person: cream cheese contains milk components and, depending on the product, some lactose. Many people get on fine with small amounts, but if you're sensitive to lactose, it's worth checking the pack.
Dill contains small amounts of essential oils and other plant compounds. In this roll, it's mainly there for its fresh aroma.
