Ingredients

Method

You’ll need: high-speed blender

  1. Take the banana out of the freezer and let the espresso cool completely. Have the almond milk, protein powder and cocoa powder ready.
  2. Put the banana, cold espresso, almond milk, ice cubes, protein powder and cocoa powder in a high-speed blender.
  3. Blend everything until the shake is creamy and smooth. If it seems too thick, add a little more almond milk.
  4. Taste briefly and blend again if needed so the cocoa and protein powder are fully combined.
  5. Pour straight into a large glass and enjoy cold right away.

Good to know

When mornings need to be quick, this shake is my go-to morning drink. Creamy, cool and pleasantly bold in flavour. Just right when you want coffee and something filling in one go.

Swaps

Frozen banana → frozen courgette + 1–2 dates (less sugar per serving, but still creamy) Unsweetened almond milk → unsweetened soya milk (more protein, usually more filling) Protein powder (vanilla or chocolate) → silken tofu (fewer additives, provides natural protein) Double espresso → cold brew made from Arabica coffee

Allergens

Contains almonds and, depending on the protein powder, possible allergens such as soya or pea protein. Only suitable for children to a limited extent because of the caffeine; during pregnancy, your total caffeine intake matters.

Frequently asked questions

How much caffeine does the double espresso add to the shake?

It depends on the beans and how it's made, but it's often roughly 100 to 150 mg of caffeine. The cocoa powder adds small amounts too.

Which minerals does the banana add to this shake?

Banana mainly provides potassium and some vitamin B6. The exact amount varies with size and ripeness.

Is such a small amount of cocoa powder nutritionally relevant?

A teaspoon only provides small amounts of magnesium, iron and polyphenols. Nutritionally it's a small addition, but you can clearly taste it.

Does almond milk suit everyone?

Unsweetened almond milk is often light and mild in flavour, but it isn't suitable if you have a nut allergy. Fortified products can also contain calcium; unfortified ones often much less.

Can the protein powder upset your stomach?

Yes, depending on the type and how it's sweetened, some people get bloating or a feeling of fullness. Particularly sensitive people sometimes react to sugar alcohols, thickeners or certain protein sources.
