Ingredients

Method

You’ll need: frying pan · chopping board · knife · grater

  1. Coarsely grate the cucumber, salt it lightly and leave it to stand briefly. Then squeeze out as much liquid as you can.
  2. For the tzatziki, stir the natural yoghurt with the cucumber, garlic, lemon juice, olive oil and a little pepper until smooth. Keep it in the fridge until serving.
  3. Cut the chicken breast into thin strips and the onion into rings. Mix the meat thoroughly with olive oil and the gyros spice mix.
  4. Heat a large frying pan over a high heat and fry the chicken without any extra oil until well browned. Add the onion at the end and fry it briefly until soft.
  5. Taste the tzatziki again and adjust the seasoning if needed. Take the meat out of the pan as soon as it is cooked through and still juicy.
  6. Serve the chicken gyros straight away with the cold tzatziki.

Good to know

When you want something hearty and uncomplicated, this is just the thing. Warm, well-seasoned meat and cool tzatziki are simply a good match.

Swaps

Chicken breast → skinless chicken thighs (a little juicier, also provide iron and zinc) | natural yoghurt → plain Greek yoghurt (also provides protein, creamier texture) | onion → red onion (milder flavour, similar plant compounds) | olive oil → avocado oil (more heat-stable, mainly unsaturated fats)

Allergens

Contains milk (yoghurt). For children, season mildly and go easy on the garlic; in pregnancy, cook the chicken right through and use pasteurised yoghurt.
