Good to know

In winter, many cafés have a chestnut latte on the menu, usually made with syrup. This version gets its flavour from pre-cooked chestnuts that you blend with oat drink and maple syrup. That makes it creamy without any cream.

Swaps

Oat milk → milk (then vegetarian). Chestnuts → 2 tbsp unsweetened chestnut purée. Maple syrup → honey (then no longer vegan). Espresso → strong filter coffee.

Cooking tips

Blend the chestnuts with just a little oat drink first until no pieces remain, then add the rest.

Storage

The chestnut milk keeps for 2 days in the fridge without the espresso; shake before heating.

Allergens

No milk, egg or nuts – chestnuts aren't among the tree nuts on the allergen list; oat milk contains gluten (oats) unless labelled gluten-free. Espresso contains caffeine and isn't for children. In pregnancy, have no more than 200 mg caffeine a day (about 2 cups of coffee), from all sources combined.
