At a glance

Ingredients

Method

You’ll need: juicer · chopping board · knife

  1. Wash the carrots, apple, ginger and lemon. Peel the carrots if needed and cut everything into pieces for the juicer.
  2. Feed the carrots, apple, ginger and lemon through the juicer one after the other.
  3. Pour the juice into a glass or jug. If foam forms, leave it to stand briefly or skim it off.
  4. Stir in the linseed oil if you like the shot more rounded.
  5. Dilute the shot with a little water if you have a sensitive stomach.

Good to know

A shot like this is quick to make and tastes pleasantly fresh rather than aggressively hot. In the morning especially, I like the mix of gentle sweetness, acidity and a little warmth.

Swaps

Apple → cucumber (very fresh) Apple → celery (low-carb, savoury freshness; celery is an allergen) Linseed oil → MCT oil from coconut (neutral flavour) Carrots → a little golden beetroot (earthy and mild, a bit more variety)

Allergens

The recipe contains none of the classic main allergens, but lemon and ginger can be quite intense for children, people with a sensitive stomach or in pregnancy; if unsure, drink it diluted.

Frequently asked questions

Why does linseed oil go with carrot?

Carrots contain beta-carotene, a fat-soluble carotenoid. A little linseed oil adds fat and also brings alpha-linolenic acid.

Does ginger suit everyone?

Not necessarily. Ginger is aromatic and hot, which many people enjoy, but it can irritate a sensitive stomach or reflux.

What's in apple, nutritionally?

Apple mainly provides carbohydrates and small amounts of potassium, plus various polyphenols. Some of the fibre stays behind in the pulp when juicing, though.

How much vitamin C does the lemon add to this shot?

Lemon contributes vitamin C and adds a fresh acidity to the flavour. The exact amount in the glass depends a lot on size, ripeness and processing.

Is the shot suitable for children and in pregnancy?

The ingredients are everyday ones, but ginger and lemon can be quite intense. For children and in pregnancy, a small amount makes sense, as long as it suits you.
