Ingredients
400g mixed berries
1 tbsp lemon juice
80g porridge oats
50g ground almonds or hazelnuts
40g cold butter
2 tbsp honey or maple syrup
1/2 tsp cinnamon
Method
You’ll need: oven
Preheat the oven to 190 °C (170 °C fan) and have an ovenproof dish ready.
Spread the mixed berries in the dish with the lemon juice.
Rub the oats, ground almonds or hazelnuts, cinnamon and butter together with your fingers into coarse crumbs. Mix in the honey or maple syrup.
Scatter the crumble loosely over the berries so the top can bake nice and crisp.
Bake at 170 °C fan for 20–25 min, until the berries release their juice and the crumble is golden brown. Then let it cool briefly.
Serve warm, on its own or with a little natural yoghurt if you like.
Good to know
Warm, juicy, crunchy – exactly the kind of dessert that tastes like home without much effort. Especially lovely when the berries burst slightly in the oven and everything smells wonderful.
Swaps
Butter → ghee (less lactose, similarly stable for baking) | Honey → date paste (less free sugar, also brings fibre) | Almonds → walnuts (add omega-3 fatty acids) | Oats → buckwheat flakes (a gluten-free alternative if labelled accordingly)
Allergens
Contains milk, tree nuts and gluten (oats). Well suited to children if the berries are baked soft; during pregnancy it's no concern as long as all ingredients are fresh and prepared hygienically. Contains: gluten (oats). Honey isn't suitable for babies under 1 year old.
