  1. Bring the water to the boil, pour it over the black tea and leave it to steep for 4 minutes. Remove the teabags.

  3. Put the grape juice, tea, orange slices, lemon juice, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise and cardamom into a pan.
  4. Heat the punch over a low heat for 15 minutes without letting it boil.
  5. Pour the punch through a sieve into four mugs and add an orange slice to each.

Good to know

This punch tastes like a Christmas market but contains no alcohol. Grape juice brings colour and sweetness, and black tea adds the slightly tannic note that usually comes from the wine. That way, children and adults can drink from the same pan.

Swaps

Black tea → rooibos tea (caffeine-free, for children). Grape juice → half cherry juice. Orange → mandarins. Cardamom → a piece of ginger.

Cooking tips

Don't let the punch boil, or the spices will turn bitter. If you keep it warm for longer, take out the cloves and orange slices after 30 minutes.

Storage

Once cooled, it keeps in a bottle in the fridge for 3 days; heat it before serving.

Allergens

No gluten, milk, egg or nuts. Black tea contains a little caffeine: for children, use rooibos; in pregnancy, the small amount is fine.
