Alcohol-free glogg punch with blackcurrant juice and almonds
Swedish-style alcohol-free glogg punch made with blackcurrant juice and apple juice, with cardamom, cinnamon and ginger, vegan, with raisins and almonds. A warm drink for Advent, 195 kcal.
Peel three wide strips of orange zest from the orange with a vegetable peeler and slice the ginger.
Put the blackcurrant juice, apple juice, water, orange zest, ginger, cinnamon stick, lightly crushed cardamom pods and cloves into a pan.
Heat everything over a low heat for 15 minutes without letting it boil, then stir in the maple syrup.
Toast the slivered almonds in a dry frying pan for 2–3 minutes until fragrant.
Divide the raisins and slivered almonds between four mugs, pour the glogg over them through a sieve and serve with a spoon.
Good to know
In Sweden, glogg is as much a part of Advent as mulled wine is in Germany. Typical features are cardamom and the raisins and almonds that sit in the mug and get eaten with a spoon. This version is alcohol-free, and blackcurrant juice gives it depth.
Swaps
Blackcurrant juice → grape juice (sweeter). Maple syrup → honey (then no longer vegan). Almonds → walnuts. Raisins → chopped figs.
Cooking tips
Pure blackcurrant juice is tart; mixed with apple juice, it becomes rounder. Taste the glogg at the end and add a little more maple syrup if needed.
Storage
Without the raisins and almonds, it keeps for 3 days in the fridge once cooled.
Allergens
Contains almonds (tree nuts); no gluten, milk or egg. Suitable for children and in pregnancy.
