Ingredients

Method

You’ll need: air fryer · saucepan

  1. Score a cross into the rounded side of each chestnut.
  2. Soak the chestnuts in hot water for 10 minutes and pat them dry.
  3. Cook the chestnuts in the air fryer at 200 °C for 15 minutes, until the shells burst open. Shake the basket after 7 minutes.
  4. Melt the butter with the chopped rosemary and sea salt in a small saucepan.
  5. Peel the chestnuts while they're still warm and toss them in the rosemary butter.

Good to know

Hot chestnuts aren't just for the Christmas market. In the air fryer they burst open in 15 minutes, and soaking them first keeps them soft inside. Rosemary butter turns them into a snack for an autumn evening.

Swaps

Butter → olive oil (vegan). Rosemary → thyme. Sea salt → cinnamon with a little honey for a sweet version.

Cooking tips

Only score the shell, not deep into the flesh. Peel the chestnuts straight away – once they've cooled, the inner skin is hard to remove.

Storage

Peeled chestnuts keep in the fridge for 2 days; store raw chestnuts somewhere cool and airy for 1 week.

Allergens

Contains milk (butter); gluten-free, with no egg. Chestnuts aren't among the tree nuts on the allergen list.
